You Are BEAUTIFUL!

So, I have a friend (actually, I like to think that I have a few), and I have sisters…and daughters…and many of them feel (as I do) that we are anything but beautiful on any given day.  We get overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy about our accomplishments, our figures, our blemishes (that oft-times only we see), our shortcomings…the list could go on and on and on…but what I want to say (and literally yell from my little window in cyberspace) is that

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!!

(And, guys, you are not off the hook.  If you have women in your life–you know, mothers, sisters, friends, wives, daughters–they need to hear that from you.  Your words have POWER.  Please tell someone they are beautiful today!)

So, back to my friend (who is completely beautiful and wise and amazing and fantastic and talented and gorgeous inside and out)…she and I try to build each other, and I’m so grateful that she will send a text or email at just the right moment to help me feel like the beautiful person that I am (yet rarely acknowledge).

So–here are my “I Feel Pretty” songs for your enjoyment (and some are on the Spotify playlist on the sidebar, too, if you’d rather listen than watch):

I got this one from my sister when I was having a terrible time recently…and it’s still my go-to happy/pretty song:

Keri Hilson – Pretty Girl Rock

And, of course, I love this one:

Bruno Mars – Just the Way You Are

This list wouldn’t be complete without a little 1D:

One Direction – What Makes You Beautiful

And for just a little overall empowerment/you are amazingly powerful songs, I love:

Defying Gravity (from Wicked) (this performance is from the Tony Awards)

And the lovely Natasha Bedingfield has two I adore:

Unwritten

&

Strip Me

I hope you feel a little bit more of who you are today–amazing, beloved, dear, wonderful, powerful…& BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

🙂

Tuesday, Again?

File:Musical notes.svg

Since I have recently been exploring (& frankly fairly enamoured of) Spotify–I totally spaced the Single of the Week on iTunes (& I am all over free music…thus my current infatuation with Spotify)–even though I’ve been up for about eight hours of my day already!

So, here’s the scoop–the free song this week is from Bridgit Mendler (think Lemonade Mouth soundtrack, if you saw that). The song is okay…kinda pop/rap/hip hop? (Again, it’s FREE…so download or not, but please don’t complain.) I did download it because the sound clip sounded clean enough for my tweenagers, and, if I ever get to hit the pavement again running (which I would have been out this morning until I heard the weather), it’s peppy enough to add to that playlist.

And while we are talking about music again, any of you out there who are more experienced with Spotify, please let me know if/how I can play my playlist (not the radio setting) on my mobile!!!!! I do have internet access always on my phone, but the app just goes to radio when I hit a song on the playlist. WHY??????? I have no idea. I’m not as impressed with the app as I am with the desktop program and the lovely playlist on my sidebar (which, by the way, makes me happier than I can say). 🙂

Happy Tuesday!

To Spotify…or Not to Spotify?

That is the question. 🙂

Well, this morning, after various posts by friends (and honestly, today I’ve needed a little bit more happiness to get me out of the present funk I’m in), I decided to spend some time trying to make sense of Spotify.  And, guess what?!?!?!?  I think I’m getting it…!

Plus, you can somehow plug in music to your blog, which brings me to my current blog experiment (which is, namely, trying to paste a song into my blog)…let’s see if this works:

Favs

Well, that was a little less exciting than I thought.  Maybe I’ll enjoy listening to it anyway.

Happy Friday!

(P.S.–I’ve started a short story fiction piece to post later next week…stay tuned!)

***UPDATE LATER***I figured out how to add a playlist (or you could add just a song) from Spotify to my blog on the sidebar. (See it?) If you are a WP blogger, the info is in the comments. :)***

New Music Tuesday

I love Tuesdays!!!!!  Why?  Well, I’ll tell you.  Tuesday is not Monday (and though yesterday was a pretty good Monday, they are not generally consistently good, like Fridays).  And, Tuesday is my park day (unless it’s raining).  And, of course, Tuesday marks a new free single on iTunes, as well as new releases and updates on what is selling in the music world.  Fun times all around on Tuesday!

So, what’s free this week?  It’s a song entitled, “Fall Around” by a band called Smoke & Jackal.  It’s kinda mellow, and compared to the sounds of U2 from their Joshua Tree album on the review.  I kinda like it, but the sound bite is pretty repetitive….  Still, it’s FREE, so how can anyone complain?  Get it, or don’t, but no complaining.  🙂

So what’s hot and new?  The new Taylor Swift album, which has yet to be fully released, has been gaining major popularity, with catchy songs like, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”  My daughter and I Googled the video for this last night while we were cooking dinner, and I couldn’t stop singing it all evening.  Then, we modified the lyrics after watching the new Justin Bieber/Nicki Minaj “Beauty and a Beat” video  promoted heavily on VEVO (which I frankly couldn’t finish watching) to sing, “We are never ever ever listening to Justin Bieber [again].”  Cuteness turned smut is just not my style, I guess.  Too much hand to crotch for my taste, and I certainly don’t want my kiddos thinking girls flipping through water in bikinis and bumping and grinding dancers are the norm.  Sorry.

I have felt the need to get back into music (which was very much a part of my life for most of my growing up years…anything from show tunes to sacred music to pop to alternative rock of the time…) after about a decade of vacation from popular music (mostly 2000-2010).  My kiddos started to listen to music they would hear at PE or learn from friends, and I thought I’d better be informed about what they were listening to instead of sticking my head in the sand.  Now, we have loaded iPods and a couple of those Just Dance games, but I try to make them aware of how music makes them feel (as well as the message of the words).

We recently had an issue with my boys, one in particular, loving a song about “party rock,” (which is defined by Urban Dictionary as a type of music, but is also defined as a type of crack cocaine).  Go figure.  They thought the song seemed harmless enough (dancing, partying); I thought the rhythms sounded like an orgasm or some type of high.  Who knew?  All I know is that I don’t want my pre-teen (or teenage, for that matter) children listening to it.  Again, I try to teach them that the feelings the music invokes (through rhythms, beats, etc.) are often as powerful (or in some cases more powerful, and more subtle) than what the words say (which is sometimes enough to keep a song from being played often in our home).  Some people don’t care, but I am not one of those people.

Music is very powerful within my psyche.  I can listen to music to laugh, dance, cry, rejoice, or empower.  In my younger years, I would use music at times to induce or feed a stupor or depressed state.  I realize not every one is affected by music so strongly, but who knows which one of my children will be highly affected or not?  I just feel the need to be careful.

So, my attempt to a “Happy Tuesday–free music” post has gone preachy…oh, well.  Maybe next week will be lighter!

Hugs till then!  –K

Happily Feeling All Things Friday

And by Friday, I do not mean that ridiculous Rebecca Black song that got like 40 gazillion YouTube hits (okay, I’m exaggerating)…I’m talking about the Friday that begins the weekend!!!!  With the advent of this day, I just wake up happy knowing that tomorrow is mine to build or make or create or sleep or clean or stay in bed or nap or take a day trip adventure with the kiddos and Superman (did I mention that my husband used to be mistaken for Clark Kent?).  Well, on this lovely Friday, I have already gotten several kiddos off to school, eaten breakfast, exercised, showered, and drawn numerous pictures of Batman, the bat light (whatever it’s called…that light with the bat symbol that is used to notify Batman of his need to come to the rescue), and the Batmobile (which is sometimes called the “Bat car” by my little guy, since when he says “Batmobile,” it sounds like something totally different…more like “BatmanBill” and I don’t know how to draw that…whatever it is). 🙂  This is the version of the Batmobile we drew today:

From where does all this newfound energy come? (Oh, I forgot to add that I’m in the middle of painting my toes and have also decided on my ensemble for tonight’s hot date with Mr. Right. If you read yesterday’s post, I think we’ve broken down the wall and mended the rift…& we are going to dinner tonight to enjoy some local food flavors and adult conversation.)  I have no idea…but today is FRIDAY, and I am filled with hope for the weekend, connection with family and friends, and feeling oh-so-happy!  🙂

How are you?

What’s been on my mind…

Well, I was thinking maybe I should wait until Valentine’s Day or something…but since two nights ago, when I found one of these songs for cheap on iTunes, and I keep dancing to the small sound bite, I have been thinking of songs with the word “kiss” in the title.  Bizarre, maybe…but I am working on a list.  Here are a few for fun (watch Prince at your own risk…my tweenagers didn’t care for him)! I also make a playlist of “love songs” for my dearest husband on our anniversary each year…so if you have favorite “love songs” or even positive relationship songs, I’m all ears!
